A Note About Hair Loss
Hair loss, also sometimes called alopecia, is generally seen in three different variations. Nizoral is only rated as being effective for one of these types, so it is important to be very familiar with them. The three types are:

• Alopecia Areata – In this type of alopecia, a person (male or female) will experience hair loss in patches, which may be either large or small. As of right now, this type of non-traditional hair loss is not able to be treated with Nizoral.

• Alopecia Totalis – The condition known as Alopecia Totalis is characterized by a total and complete progressive loss of all hair on a person’s scalp. This type of hair loss is able to be treated by Nizoral.

• Alopecia Universalis – In this type of alopecia, an individual will experience a variation of the condition of Alopecia Areata, though Alopecia Universalis involves a total loss of body hair.

How does Nizoral Work?
Nizoral shampoo helps to prevent hair loss much in the same way as many other anti-hair loss products. Technically, Nizoral is classified as being a shampoo that has antifungal treatment properties. However, Nizoral is also designed to reduce inflammation, as well as block androgen receptors in the scalp. Combined with the cleansing properties of this product, this helps to target the three of the main causes of hair loss:

• Fungal Infection

• Inflammation of the Scalp

• Unclean Scalp

The Active Ingredient
In Nizoral shampoo, the active ingredient in this formula is stated as being ketoconazole in a 1% concentration. This is a synthetic drug, which is commonly used for its antifungal properties. It was first discovered in 1981, and has become widely used for skin infections caused by certain types of fungus. The side effects of ketoconazole include a decrease in testosterone, which is sometimes used to treat other medical conditions. A recent scientific study has suggested that ketoconazole has a marked stimulatory effect on hair growth.

Effectiveness
In general, most consumers report favorable results from using Nizoral shampoo to help prevent hair loss. As for the validity of if Nizoral is able to promote new hair growth, that is still a topic that requires further study until it is officially recognized. Nizoral should not be used on a daily basis, as it can sometimes cause an allergic reaction with frequent use. To most effectively use Nizoral, rotate it with your normal shampoo about twice per week. By leaving the product in your hair for around three minutes, you can also increase Nizoral’s effectiveness in helping prevent hair loss.

Dihydrotestosterone is a chemical that forms from testosterone, and when it’s levels are too high, it can aid in the death of your hair follicles which in turn makes them fall out.

Nizoral Hair Loss Shampoo (technically anti-dandruff shampoo) has been proven to drastically reduce the conversion rate of testosterone to the hair thinning chemical- dihydrotestosterone, which is why it is commonly used to treat people with acute hair loss.

Although the amount of shampoo needed from patient to patient varies, the most common Nizoral application is 5-10mL on your pre-soaked scalp.

Simply leave the lather on for about 5 minutes, then wash away as you would with any other shampoo. If you happen to get the Nizoral hair loss shampoo into your eyes, just wash it out thoroughly until the burning has completely stopped.

Although the application and doseage suggested here are the most common, they should not be over-ride any instructions recieved by your personal doctor.
